I dropped by for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and cost of the Japanese food at Okazuri. We tried the green tea, cucumber roll, edamame, miso soup, and vegetable teriyaki, which fed two of us. Everything we had was fresh and tasty and only cost about $20! The only knock I would give them, and it is small, is that the rolls were huge and could not possibly be eaten in one bite, as most sushi is intended to be, so it was hard to taste all of the flavors together. The interior is nicely done up, and feels pretty swanky without being stuffy. Our wait staff was friendly and willing to go the extra mile. They even gave us a discount as my dining partner was near the age for a senior discount (they never checked to make sure, they just instantly gave us the discount when asked!). This was a welcome change compared to the other Japanese restaurant on University, Mix, where the staff tend to act as if you are lucky, as the customer, to be visiting their establishment. I would suggest trying Okazuri and I hope that they are able to survive in a town that has almost instantly become flush with Japanese restaurants.

It really pains me to write a low review liie this, as the food is actually delicious and this restaurant continues to make my favorite sushi; however the service was deplorable. After taking my order the entire staff sat down at a table to all have lunch, regardless of the fact that there were diners in the establishment. I waited 20 minutes bedore anybody coupd be bothered to check up on me. I understand that the restaurant is slow, but as a person who makes a living in hospitality this is not an acceptable way to conduct business. I wil be contacting the owner/manager.

Avoid. Dishonest business practice. they posted happy hour 2 to 4 pm on their website and a 15 for 30 dollar deal on yelp. They didnt honor any of it. Talking to the manager didnt help either. I think they have no idea on how to manage their yelp account.

I have had the unfortunate experience of visiting this restaurant twice, once when they first opened and then again more recently when friends asked me to reconsider my opinion of this dreadful place. The service was terrible, the unpleasant stench of fish hung in the air, and the sushi was sloppy and fell apart when I tried to eat it. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Never again.

Stooped here for lunch on our 11 hour drive. It was not busy- only 2 other people eating, so we sat at the floating sushi bar. The food was great! My husbands dishes took over 25 minutes to come out, while my sushi was only about 10 minutes. Sonny and Amador at the sushi bar were amazing staff, very professional, pleasant and helpful. Our waitress was not very good. We only saw her 4 times, to take our order, bring our drinks, deliver our food, and give our ticket. That is one of my pet peeves- please don't let my water glass get empty!

So, I'm from the east coast and I know sushi in Las Cruces will never compare. I walked into okazuri with an open mind willing to try a little bit of everything. I ordered the spicy tuna roll, the classic rainbow roll and the 12 nigiri combo. I'll start with the good, roll-wise I would give the spicy tuna a 6/10. I am cutting the restaurant some slack because it is in the middle of the desert. The spicy tuna was just a roll mixed with Sriracha, which is how most rolls are made nowadays. The rainbow roll I would give a 7/10, hard to mess up a classic rainbow roll, but the 7 is just I wish it was a little more fresh. Now the bad. The 12 piece nigiri was probably intended to be good, but they put this salad right in the middle of the plate with a vinegar - like dressing. Needless to say, the vinegar dressing was absorbed by the rice which ruined the entire plate. I ate 1 roll and my palate was ruined. You cannot taste anything. So the meal was ruined. I am sure I will not be refunded my money, nor was the offer made to re make my dish. I will add a picture with what the plate looked like

The service was really goos but the sushi itself left a lot to be desired. Very few "fresh" options--lots of cream cheese and fried fried fried casings, as opppsed to what I've come to expect from sushi restaurants. I felt sick after. 2 stars because service was good. Sushi was 1 star.

Squid salad is good here and plentiful at $6.50. As a sushi place, the rolls are not well done, the quality is low, and 90% of the rolls come with cream cheese. Por favor... Service and atmosphere are so-so. Live music is nice but too loud for the type of environment.

We had an amazing experience. Very fussy about Shashimi coming from Miami. Great service and great food and generous portions. Here with my vrry good friend Chris.

The Franklin Rolls were very good. The Banana Rolls were sweet. Excellent service. I especially liked the Combination Teppanyaki plate. My son in law loved the Mido Soup which was freshly made.

Pretty much every roll has cream cheese. The service can be bad. The rolls are big and pretty filling.

Poor service, a waitress who forgets orders (nevermind the fact she doesn't write anything down). Far from authentic, rolls covered on mayo based sauces, way too much mirin in the sushi rice. I stopped by 3 times, each time giving them the benefit of the doubt and 3 times they screwed up. Never going back. PS. Its a sushi bar that blasts country music. Not what I'm looking for when I'm in a sushi bar.

Premade salads (squid, seaweed) are delicious. Sushi is disgusting. The last time I ordered a traditional rainbow roll at least 2 pieces of fish were rubbery (inedible) or old, with a weird mouthfeel. Something's gone downhill at this place.... Sadly, would not recommend.

I love this place! The food is always good! I love their spicy tuna, sonomomo and all the fried rolls, yum!

This place is far from authentic, far from delicious. I've never experienced such a completely sub-par dining experience as the one i had at Okazuri. I ordered the nigiri 10-piece combination plate. My partner ordered a "teppanyaki" chicken and shrimp and a side of squid salad (mind you, absolutely the best part of the entire meal and I guarantee you it was prepackaged). The "sushi chef" seemed to be very new at the world of sushi because each cut of dry fish looked like he may have been practicing on a block of cheese perhaps, but definitely nothing resembling a typical sashimi cut. The sushi rice had no vinegar seasoning, and each piece of nigiri gave me the excitement of having to chase the remnants around the plate because of how loosely (or carelessly) they were made. The "teppanyaki" chicken and shrimp tasted, I kid you not, EXACTLY LIKE THEY WERE COOKED IN MOVIE POPCORN BUTTER. DISGUSTING! AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE. unless of course you want them to comp your awful meal as well... :)

I've been to this restaurant twice and I definitely won't go back again. The miso soup tasted like luke warm chicken broth. The waiter brought my friend's main course 15 minutes before I got my main course. I received my appetizer 15 minutes after I received my main course once I reminded the waiter I had ordered an appetizer. I ordered a California roll. The roll was loose and I couldn't pick up a piece without it breaking apart. The rice was filmy and tasted stale. The restaurant was not busy at all and the service was horrible. I would highly recommend going to another sushi restaurant in town.

Sorry, but this place is an NR - No Return in my book. Here is the breakdown: Service - the place was slow, the service slower. It was near empty and I was seated in a corner facing the wall. Food - I have been to many sushi places (being from California) and the sushi is very....very poor quality. It was actually 'filmy' and I still have residue in my mouth. I now know why they call it Floating as my food is floating at the back of my esophagus. I've had great sushi in Vegas...guess not in NM. In addition, every roll pretty much has cream cheese. A better name for this place would have been the Okazuri Cream Cheese Bar. I wonder if the other 2 (chains) in El Paso are better? It was obvious by the cut of the roll and fish that the sushi chefs...well, weren't sushi chefs. I ordered the classic rainbow roll as that was about the only roll that didn't have cream cheese on it. Not only was my sushi not wrapped to, or cut properly, with the roll (creating a horrible texture adding to the poor quality sushi), but my avacado was brown. UGH! It tasted absolutely horrible. The one roll I thought they could make properly and I think I may end up hugging the toilet tonight. Stomach is hurting. I may go ask for my money back. What else is there. Ambiance...its nice...but I can't eat the ambiance. My recommendation...buy some cream cheese and a bagel. Even get wild with some smoked salmon and capers. It will leave you feeling better than this place.

Okazuri is my favorite restaurant in Las Cruces. I have been twice and both times my friends and I really enjoyed it. I was really surprised at the quality of the sushi, considering that the restaurant is located in the middle of the desert. I thought it was better than what I had at Aqua (and less expensive). Some of the rolls were great, others have been ok, so I think it's a matter of figuring out what combinations you like. The service was hands-down the best service I've had in Las Cruces (although I did have the same server both times). I also really like the atmosphere.

This was our second trip to Okazuri. We visited during their first week of operation in September (or perhaps August). They clearly did not have their act together yet. Staff had not been trained. Service was dreadful. Food was less than mediocre. We visited the restaurant last week. Little had changed, except the place seemed much busier. There was no hostess to seat us... A server said "Anyplace you sit is fine." About five minutes later, another server came by to take a drink order. We asked some questions about menu items (the menus looked frayed and in need of replacement or at least cleaning! They are printed in small print and in dark colors... very challenging to read. The server was helpful and knowledgeable. We placed our order ... and waited.... and waited... When I asked another server (ours was too busy to check on us!)... she returned to say it would be another ten minutes to get our sushi. The complementary miso arrived and it was lukewarm, overly salty, and totally inedible. When our sushi finally arrived, it was plentiful, but not really as fresh as we would like. The Aggie roll (deep fried) was plentiful and tasty. The rest of our food was questionable. We left quickly and doubt that we will ever return. Even with my NMSU discount, our bill -- including gratuity was over $52..... We can and certainly will find a more reasonable and tasty alternative. Sayonara Okazuri!

Best sushi i have had in Las Cruces. We went there on a Sat night and sat on the outside patio with our dog. There was live music inside. The waiter was friendly, and served us very well. The sushi was fresh, i had a roll with shrimp, crab, and avocado in it. My partner ate a chicken stir-fry, he wasn't impressed with the quality of meat and rice. So go there for the rolls!

Have been three times, once w/co-workers when it first opened and everyone liked the food, ambiance and the service. Second time I went w/husband and he really appreciated the many alternatives to sushi (which he doesn't like). Again, it was good EXCEPT they didn't bring him the dish he ordered and, by the time they got the right dish out, I was finished w/my entree. Even so, we went back. Third time was not so pleasant, it seemed like the quality of food had gone downhill. Plus, the server didn't pace the meal properly and we ended up with soup, appetizers and entrees at just about the same time, over-crowding the table. We're undecided on whether or not we'll go back.

This is a fairly new establishment. . I've tried all of the "sushi" restaurants in town and I give this place my vote for the best. Great tasting rolls at a great price. The Monkey and Rainbow rolls are very tasty, served with hot miso. We order 5 rolls and not one disappointed us. Across the street from NMSU and easy to get to.
